Burnt Out

Its the end of the semester, yes as we all know. I'm tired of class, all of my projects are coming due. I feel as though I'm not putting the effort I could into these. I have so many projects and they all get part of my time and thats the time I actually commit to them. Oh well, the end is here and a break is much needed. Time to unwind and prepare for the next semester to come :)

Coming to a Close

Ok... so its here, the end of the semester is again around the corner and I feel like it just started. I have like 6 projects or things to do in 3 weeks, so thats like what two things a week. I can do that right? Sometimes being an art major can be very taxing especially when your a devout believer in procrastination. I really need to kick this habit. Sometimes I think I am going to school to see how far I can push myself, just to see what I am capable of. Anyone Else out there a compulsive procrastinator if there is such a thing? What is the closest you've come to a deadline?

I have an Idea for a story

Ok so I have what I consider to be an incredible idea for a story that I would like to write and in the future maybe even illustrate. My story is going to have something to do with the soul and its relation to the outside world. Does anyone have any commentary as to what I may want to watch out for or anything that is over referenced in the world of writing? If you have any ideas, keep me posted. Thanks.

Juggling

So tonight my post is about juggling, no not the classic form of juggling, but more of a time management. I have many classes, a work schedule, as well as a social life (aka a girlfriend). As of right now I am managing all of them pretty well but the last couple of weeks have been quite mind numbing, between project due dates and starts I am pretty much in awe of how I can finish something and ask myself how I got there. Seriously sometimes after reading an article i sit there and wonder what the heck I just read, or I will have drawn or made something and then wonder how I accomplished such a task without even paying attention... Do any of you suffer from this same affliction (or might you call it a blessing?)? I guess it depends on the situation...

Excited

So Ive picked out my new schedule for next semester and Im soooo excited for it, so much so that I cant wait for this semester to be over just so i can start a whole new one. Ive never really "painted" before aside from just attempts at colors and painting inside the lines of a created design for some projects in my 2D foundations class. I hope to be pushed and really get a feel for it, this next semester will be a very crucial semester, it will be the decision maker for what my classes and "emphasis" will be from here on out. Wish me luck(and of course advice is always welcome).

Getting back into the groove of things

Ok so I'm sure it happens to most of us, we go on spring or fall break and instead of coming back refreshed... you feel tenfold worse. I just recieved an assignment through email (yay, not), because who doesnt love getting assignments over email, you open it and just go "oh yeah, crap." So when starting an art assignment comming off of a break or vacation or what have you, what are the best ways to get motivated again? What things might you recommend that does not work (so those of us reading wont try those either)?

Have you ever had a project you thought would be easy and it turned out to be a nightmare? Welcome to my life right now. Im working on this project for my 3D foundation class and its taking me so long. Its not even that difficult its just all the small detail work, all that stuff that makes a huge difference in the end. What are your experiences? As for me it looks as though im going to get little sleep again because of one of these blasted projects, hopefully it turns out well... wish me luck.

And this week, another assignment

I would just like to point out the difficulty level between both 3D and 2D artwork. If you havent tried 3D, you should. You have to look and think about something in a whole new way. Its not just a drawing where you put it down on a flat plain and it is what it is, you have to consider how light affects the piece, how the surroundings affect it. Its plain is the world and it reacts differently in different places (and in my case at different times of the day). When you work on something at 3am in the morning and you think your doing such a great job, that its the next marvel of the art world and when you get to class at 12pm and you set it up and you have a completely different view of it. Its embarrassing really, you start to wonder what you were thinking, how you could have even thought you were done or even. It never goes to plan but you hope for the best and those timid comments within the critique lift your spirits just enough to keep you moving on to the next project. Give it a try.

A simple comparison

After finding another blog to post my thoughts upon I find myself looking at the similarities and differences in or between American Comics, Cartoons, and other various animation to those in Japan, such as Manga or Anime. They both have simplistic abstractions of character design but what really makes them so different? As i sit and look at both forms of artwork I see that he Characters in America are more detailed or just as detailed as the background or landscape. With Anime Characters I am finding them to be more simplistic, or stand away from the landscape (at least for a majority of the comic or episode. There has to be more to it, everyone draws differently, this is a fact of life but what makes such a huge shift between cultures? Why would one be classified as manga and another an American comic? If you have any ideas, please share...

Art and Technology

Some times I hate technology, it doesnt work right away or it doesnt work as quickly or as efficiently as I or we would like. The truth is technology has problems and as a people who are becoming more and more dependent upon it we have to learn to deal. As an artist Im learning to use technology along with my artwork, taking it to the next level and bringing the pencil and paper to the pixel form on the computer screen. It opens up many new concepts and ideas and could bring my artwork into a whole new existence or entity if you will. While I figure out how to use my art in different ways on my computer i will keep exploring new ideas while troubleshooting as the errors occur... and they will occur.

Last Friday I went to a Gallery Stroll down on University Avenue in Provo. I had been to this particular block three or four times last year and had a great experience. This time though it was lacking and left me wishing there was more, most of the galleries that had been open last year had been closed down, granted there were 2 or 3 new shops but all in all there were fewer galleries to stroll and even fewer artworks to see. I dont know if it is because of the economy(reasoning for the boutiques closing) or because there are few who are interested or maybe even know that they are around. I would like to pose a challenge to the people who read this post, go to the gallery strolls around town and support your local artists. Not only is it a fun way to spend an evening, it is also free. See you there.
